I am a microbial ecologist, focused on life and its activities in natural and manmade ecosystems. At DRI, I operate the Environmental Microbiology and Astrobiology Labs, where we work with bacteria, archaea, microeukaryotes and viruses from environments ranging from the deep subsurface to water treatment plants to archaeological materials. Our toolbox includes: environmental monitoring of physicochemical parameters, microbial isolation and characterization, growth kinetics, microscopy, stable isotope probing, quantitative PCR, DNA-based identification and community assessment, metagenomics and single-cell genomics. I am interested in exploring ways that my lab could contribute to a successful Track I proposal from Nevada.
